For almost a century, Sewell was the main camp at El Teniente -the world's largest underground copper mine- mining company established by Braden Copper Company between 1905 and 1906. With its unique style it slowly became a city of over 15 thousand inhabitants.

Currently, the former camp, maintains its beautiful civic, housing and service buildings which transformed Sewell in the "city of the stairs".
